Get Your FREE Credit Report Every Year - It's The Law!

That's Right, You Can Get A Copy Of Your Credit Report FREE Every Year From Each Of The Credit Bureaus.

It amazes me how companies are capitalizing on the amended FCRA which was enacted in 2003 via FACTA by proclaiming that they will give you a copy of your credit reports from the Big 3 Credit Bureaus for FREE!  You've probably seen the commercials recently of these companies saying they will give you a copy of your credit reports and credit score for FREE, but in reality, you can get your credit reports for free without any of these TV commercial companies.  Why? Because it is now federal law that the credit bureaus must provide you with a FREE credit report every single year.  What these TV commercials also don't tell you is that you have to sign up for a service which will cost you a monthly fee after they've given you your free credit reports.

So how is it that you can get your credit reports free yourself?  Well I'm glad you asked.

On December 1st of 2004, the three nationwide consumer reporting companies, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, began processing requests by consumers for their free annual credit reports, which you can also do now at www.annualcreditreport.com The Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003 (FACTA) amended the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requiring the credit Bureaus to provide consumers with free credit reports every 12 months.  Initially only the 13 Western States were allowed this priveledge but is now good in all States.

FTC Issues Final Rule on Free Annual Credit Reports (FACTA)

Final Rule on Free Annual Credit Reports (FACTA)

The Federal Trade Commission has issued its final rule regarding free annual credit reports under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) and the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). FACTA, which was enacted on December 4, 2003, amends the FCRA and requires, among other things, that the three nationwide consumer reporting agencies (CRAs) – Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union – provide to consumers, upon request, a free copy of their credit report once every 12 months.

The Commission published a notice of proposed rulemaking in the Federal Register on March 19, 2004, and accepted comments until April 16, 2004. The Commission received more than 2,300 comments from consumers, consumer advocates, elected officials, industry members, and trade associations.

The final rule contains many of the provisions of the proposed rule, with some modifications. Under the final rule, the nationwide CRAs must establish a “centralized source” for accepting consumer requests for free credit reports (called annual file disclosures in the final rule). This centralized source must include a dedicated Internet Web site, a toll-free telephone number, and a postal address.

The final rule also provides for a gradual, structured roll-out of the centralized source. The centralized source will become available in cumulative stages, over a period of nine months, rolling-out from west to east beginning December 1, 2004. The entire transition will be complete by September 1, 2005. Consumers will become eligible on the following schedule: Western states (Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming) will become eligible on December 1, 2004; Midwestern states (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin) will become eligible on March 1, 2005; Southern states (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas ) will become eligible on June 1, 2005; and Eastern states (Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia), Puerto Rico, and all U.S. territories will become eligible on September 1, 2005.

What does this mean in laymen's terms? It means that starting on December 1st 2004, all western States will be eligible for their free credit once a year from all three major credit bureaus. Some of them are already complying with the law in this reagard and if you send the proper proof of who you are, they will send you your free reports.

Send the following information:

- Copy of current utility bill
- Copy of your social security card
- Indicate your Name, Address, Date of Birth, and the request for your credit report.

That's all there is to it.

Websites Selling UK Bank Account and PIN Information

There has been another case of sites found to be selling people's financial and personal information.  This time it's in the UK where tens of thousands of customers information are up for sale on these websites.  The The TimesOnline
was able to download 32 different people's data without paying a cent on getting this information. These accounts included data from a high court deputy judge and a managing director. As is noted in the original story by the TimesOnline, these accounts were offered as teasers to getting people to purchase more accounts from this website.

Apparently there were 2 lost CD's with over 25 million Briton accounts which were lost and still have not been recovered. In the black market the value of this information is said to be worth approximately $100 Million dollars. All of this information is very alarming despite the fact that these are isolated to Briton's and isn't affecting the US customers.

As we have been saying for quite some time here at Credit Repair Combat, there needs to be processes and procedures in place which mimic government security measures when companies handle people's financial and personal information. One suggestion is dividing peoples information so that not all data is included in one location or file. This makes it much more difficult for information about consumers can be used. You can read the full story by the TimesOnline at the link above.
